Philosophy

Translating is a service, so I see myself as a service provider - customer satisfaction is on top of my list of priorities. You can expect reliability and flexibility, quality and utmost care as well as strict adherence to deadlines. You can also rest assured that I will only accept translations within the scope of my abilities and capacities.

Mother-Tongue Principle

Usually it takes a native speaker to provide accurate and idiomatic translations that read like originals. This is why I translate mostly from English into German. By adhering to the mother-tongue principle, I can provide translations that do not sound "translated" and are accurate, grammatically correct and written in an appropriate style.

s the translation is only for information purposes or will be proofread by a native speaker of English

Specialization

Providing a correct translation of a text one does not fully understand is close to impossible. This is why I do not feel qualified to translate very specialized legal or medical texts. I gladly leave these projects to competent colleagues who are specialized in these fields. My areas of expertise are business, economics and to some extent marketing.

A relatively new field of specialization is IT, in particular computer and internet security. Apart from marketing materials and product descriptions in this field, I have recently gathered first experiences in software localisation (help files, software strings  for employee rating and development software) and intend to broaden my knowledge in this area .

Due to my vocational training and work experience as a bilingual secretary, I am familiar with all kinds and aspects of commercial correspondence and also with marketing texts such as circulars, marketing letters, product descriptions, brochures, leaflets and catalogs/catalogues etc.

Texts of a general nature, like current newspaper and magazine articles, essays and websites, are also part of my sercie offer, just like texts from my fields of interest such as literature, children's books, child raising and educational theory, psychology and human rights' issues.

The opportunity to broaden my horizon by exploring new topics and learning about new areas is one of the aspects of the translating profession that  I greatly  appreciate. So if you need a translation of a text with a subject matter not included above, please do not hesitate to contact me - I will honestly let you know whether it is feasible for me or not.

Ongoing Education and Qualification

"Live and learn." - This is particularly true for translators. Languages keep developing (unless we are talking about Latin or Ancient Greek), so that it is indispensible to stay in touch with both, the source and the target language. I keep my linguistic proficiency up to date by reading English newspapers, periodicals and books, by watching television and DVDs in English as well as by private contacts and travels to English-speaking countries.

Even full bilingualism does not yet make for a good translator. This is why even after having finished the translation course, I keep looking into translation techniques and theories. In my fields of specialization, I keep myself informed by reading specialist literature in English and German.
